Practice News – Dr. Kandela Has Died
It is with great sadness that we must inform you that Dr. Kandela passed away unexpectedly on the 30th April 2012. This was a shock to us all, and I know that many of you will share in our feeling of loss. He was the caring doctor at this surgery for over 35 years, and as such he knew his patients, his patient’s children and even their grandchildren; spanning the generations as a traditional family doctor should. We have a memorial book in reception for those of you who have fond memories, well wishes or amusing stories of Dr Kandela to share with us.
For me, the most enduring legacy that Dr Kandela leaves behind is his kindness. He cared deeply about his patients. I saw a gentleman this week who said he loved to see Dr. Kandela, because he’d ask him how he was and really mean it; he’d ask after his family and have a good old chat for twenty minutes before even asking him what he came in for! It is precisely because he saw people as more than just names, numbers and medical conditions that he was so well loved by those he cared for.
Dr Kandela was excited about going into partnership, and about sharing the coming years of change in the NHS as a team. He became a mentor, a friend and in many ways was like a father to me. I will miss him for all these reasons and more. I hope that in continuing to run the small, friendly surgery that was the passion of his working life, the memory of his kindness can continue for many generations to come.
